Criminal justice is one of those fields where all kinds of people can find their calling. Some criminal justice experts conduct research or psychological studies in an office. Others work in laboratories, examining evidence. Still others are on the streets, supervising police officers or detectives. No matter which path is right for you, a Master of Science in Criminal Justice (MSCJ) Administration and Leadership from 91첥 can help you achieve your dream.

Averett’s MSCJ program is perfect for people entering or moving up in administration and leadership positions in a law enforcement agency or private company. It takes intense study, but with hard work and an attentive instructor, it’s possible to complete your degree in less than two years. Many Averett graduates go on to enjoy rewarding, financially lucrative careers. Wondering about the possibilities? Here are a few jobs that could be in your future:

  1. Criminal profilers analyze crime scene evidence and use various methods to help investigators focus on and apprehend the most likely suspects. They provide important insights into possible motivations for a crime and hypothesize on offenders’ characteristics, such as age, education, appearance and the probability of them committing another crime
  2. Police and detective supervisors schedule, train, motivate and evaluate officers, detectives and sometimes clerks and technicians. They ensure their staff follows departmental policies and they often assist in investigations.
  3. Correctional officer supervisors manage staffs in correctional institutions or parole departments. They assign tasks and caseloads, focusing on the safety and wellbeing of their officers, offenders and the public.
  4. Emergency management directors develop emergency plans for local, state and federal law enforcement and public protection agencies. They coordinate the emergency response between agencies when disasters strike and assist private businesses and organizations in emergency and disaster preparation and response.
  5. Forensic psychologists work in the legal system to assess suspected or convicted criminals and promote mental health treatment services. They may determine whether an accused person is fit to stand trial, evaluate the accused’s sanity, testify at trials, recommend sentencing and perform other tasks to help ensure public safety.
  6. District attorney investigators investigate crimes, do undercover work, serve warrants, collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and testify in civil and criminal court. At the federal level, attorney general investigators are classified as special agents who may work on projects related to tax and government fraud.
  7. Criminologists study crime and its causes and make policy recommendations to law enforcement. They use insights and theories from disciplines such as psychology, sociology and environmental science to learn about crime in the context of society as a whole. They may work in the field or in traditional research settings gathering information, compiling interviews and creating statistical reports to understand crime and develop ways to address it.
  8. Supervisory criminal investigators assign cases to investigators and detectives and help develop and implement departmental policies. They ensure patrol officers and investigators collect all possible evidence and complete investigations accurately and thoroughly. Field supervisors often determine when evidence technicians and other support personnel should be called to a crime scene.
  9. Forensic examiners analyze evidence from or related to a crime scene to help law enforcement officials reconstruct events. They may work in the laboratory, as consultants in the courtroom or in a combination of settings to support a case, but rarely in the field.
  10. Private security managers work for security management firms or as consultants to protect public utilities, nuclear power plants, private company data servers, social events, high-profile persons and other assets. Their focus is typically on preventing, rather than responding to, crime.

This list is just the start of what an MSCJ degree from 91첥 can lead to. The broad range of possibilities lets you choose the path best suited to your strengths and won’t lock you in for the future.

GRE? GMAT? Both? Neither? If you’re confused about which admissions tests you might have to take to get into graduate school, you’re not alone. Even though the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) has been around since 1936, and the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) was created in 1953, a lot of students have trouble deciding which one they should take, if any. And it’s not a decision you should take lightly.

The GRE, which many graduate schools require, costs $205, not to mention what you might spend on books or classes just to get ready to take the test. The fee for the GMAT, which business schools often require, is $250, not including prep. Of course, these fees assume everything goes as planned. Registering late, rescheduling, changing your test subject and retaking the exam can tack on even more time and costs.

Before you get discouraged, here’s great news. More and more top schools—91첥 included—do not require you to submit a GRE or a GMAT score as part of your master’s degree program application. In fact, a study from a few years back showed that more than 70 percent of accredited online master’s degree programs did not require GRE scores.1

Since online graduate students tend to be older, schools are more likely to look at past degrees earned, work portfolios and other evidence that students are qualified for advanced academic study. At Averett, for example, our admissions process is designed especially for busy, working adults who want to get ahead without putting their careers on hold.

Some people wonder if schools that don’t ask for GRE and GMAT scores are as good as those that do. It’s an easy answer for Averett. Our academic programs are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and many prestigious organizations have named us a top college in multiple categories year after year. Our students say it best when they tell us how we changed their lives by helping them earn a degree and achieve their dreams.

Now that you know you don’t need a GRE or GMAT score to apply to an Averett master’s degree program, you may have other questions for our admissions team. They’re always on hand to explain our simple process and guide you every step of the way to your future success.

Most people who think about going back to school know how a bachelor’s or master’s degree can accelerate their success. Others aren’t so sure. Here are a couple of scenarios we at 91첥 sometimes hear from people who don’t think they need a degree, and how we respond.

“I just got a promotion at work.”

Congratulations! That is wonderful news and we are so proud of you! You may be thinking that because of your new responsibilities, you should delay your education. In reality, other people in your shoes have discovered being in a degree program actually helped them become better leaders in their organizations. They took the principles and concepts they learned in the classroom and applied them immediately in their new jobs. This helped them further develop their leadership skills, inspired colleagues to advance their own education and showed their bosses they’re preparing for the next promotion.

91첥’s degree programs are affordable and flexible, so you can go at whatever pace suits your situation. A dedicated student success coach will be with you every step of the way to help you pursue your educational goals while you shine like a star in your new job.

“I don’t need a bachelor’s or master’s degree for my job or career.”

That’s great to hear; we love that you are in a career where your current skills are valued. That confidence may have you questioning the need to get a degree right now, but before you decide, consider that life can change at any second. We can never predict what’s going to happen next in our careers or the economy. There’s a wonderful peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re prepared in case of a sudden career change. What’s more, education is one of a very short list of things in life that no one can take from you. Many 91첥 students found the personal satisfaction and intrinsic value of their education far outweighed their initial uncertainty about needing a degree.

We want you to be your best now and prepare for whatever the future might bring. We designed our degree programs to give you that flexibility. We offer career services to all students and alum, meaning if you find yourself in a sudden career change and need help, networking contacts or advice, we’ll be here for you. Once you join the Averett family, you’re always one of us.

Keep looking ahead

Even if you’re in a great position at work right now and your career path seems set, things can change in a heartbeat. Be ready with a bachelor’s or master’s degree from 91첥. It’s a decision you’ll never regret.

Hello! My Name Is…

Hi! My name is Danielle Staub! I grew up in Boxford, Massachusetts and went to undergrad at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, where I received my bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism with minor in communications. During my time at Marietta, I played soccer and ran track. Following college, I worked in television news for about four years in both Ohio and Virginia. Then, I took the marketing and communications specialist position at 91첥. I’ve been working at Averett for more than two years now and I love it! When I’m not working I love the outdoors and spending time with my family and friends. It is highly likely that when you see me, I will have a 75-pound St. Bernard-Boxer mix by my side. His name is Rumble!

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at 91첥?

Once I switched out of broadcast news, I knew I needed a marketing degree to pursue public relations, marketing and communications in higher education. Averett offers a great opportunity for its employees who want to pursue their next degree, so I am able to balance working full time and my classes, with some serious time management and scheduling!

Why did you choose 91첥’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

The GPS program was a perfect fit for me. After working at Averett for a little over six months I felt like I could take on the tasks of classes and homework. I wanted to have that student-teacher interaction, so I decided to take classes on the ground. It has been a wonderful experience with not only the professors but the students in my class and through zoom. I can’t wait to meet all of them when we graduate!

How has your degree from AverettUniversity assisted you in your career?

When I receive my MBA with a concentration in marketing I will for one, be able to help teach students at Averett through the Averett 101 classes. I also hope to use my master’s to adjunct teach in the marketing/communications field.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in 91첥’s GPS Program?

If you think you can’t, you can! All it takes is a few, “No, I can’t do that tonight because I have homework.” Learn to balance your week with friends and school work and you will not be stressed! Don’t leave things to the last minute, it isn’t worth it. And make friends with your classmates! Having a friend to vent to or study with is always helpful.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

The support from my family and friends keeps me going. They understand that I am balancing a lot right now and when I have to say no, they understand. That’s what a true support system is all about!

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

I should graduate in 2019! I can’t wait!

According to a 2018 LinkedIn survey of 2,000 executives, the “soft” skill most important to employers is leadership.1 That’s not exactly earth-shattering news, but the kind of leadership they look for has many people thinking twice about their qualifications.

The truth is, in our fast-changing, global world, having a charismatic personality or good organizational skills is no longer enough. Companies need people who can lead teams, make sound ethical decisions and effectively leverage a melting pot of values and cultures in the workplace. A Bachelor of Applied Science degree with a concentration in Leadership Studies (BAS-L) will give you the knowledge and credentials to step up to the next level of authority in your field.

Many schools have BAS in leadership programs, but there are a few things you should verify before signing up. Here’s what to look for and how 91첥 compares:

Class size: Bigger isn’t always better. Averett’s small classes mean your group work and discussions will be more productive and rewarding.

Online access: Going to class in person can be tough when you’ve got a job, a family and other responsibilities. 91첥’s Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) online degree programs allow you to log in to classes when it works for you.

Accreditation: Educational institutions aren’t required to obtain independent accreditation, so do your homework. Averett is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Useful minors: A minor enhances your degree and makes you more valuable to potential employers. While pursuing a BAS-L at Averett, you can minor in Criminal Justice, Cyber Security, Homeland Security or Sociology.

Partnerships with other schools: Schools should make it easy for you to keep pursuing new levels of learning. 91첥, for example, automatically accepts graduates of the Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) Associate of Applied Science program into its BAS-L online program. This allows students to take the final few steps to their baccalaureate degree.

What it takes to be a leader in business has changed. Are you ready to step up?

Hello! My Name Is…

Hi! My name is Robert Horn! I’ve been a Police Officer with the Chesterfield County Police Department for the last 6 years, the last 2 years of which I’ve spent with the School Resource Officer Program. My mother and father were both principals before they retired and my sister is a speech pathologist so I have deep ties to the school system. In my spare time, I enjoy running and going on park walks with my girlfriend and dogs.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at 91첥?

My motivation for obtaining my Master’s Degree is to gain more knowledge in how to effectively lead people. As a law enforcement officer, it is vitally important to see everything around you as an asset, from your equipment to your vehicle to the people around you, they’re all resources to manage and strategically employ. Because of this, I chose to pursue a degree in Business Administration; I feel this career path will give me the greatest opportunity to help other police officers unlock their full potential. The contributions I will be making to the department will help fortify and enhance an already-strong department.

Why did you choose 91첥’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

91첥 has partnered with the Chesterfield County Police Department in an effort to provide educational opportunities to its officers who wish to continue their education in a capacity that most conducive to their family-life and inconsistent work hours. It is a wonderful opportunity of which I decided to take advantage.

How has your degree from AverettUniversity assisted you in your career?

Learning in this environment has been helpful. When I was going for my undergraduate degree, I was not the most diligent student. Taking online classes and working at my own pace has been a blessing. When it comes to my career, it has helped open my eyes to different aspects of policing that I would not have otherwise seen. The diverse potential in those around me has enabled me to not only take advantage of learning from them but also direct resources in the most effective way.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in 91첥’s GPS Program?

The advice I would share is simple, “Just keep swimming.” –Dori. When things seem to be bearing down on you in life, just keep swimming. When deadlines hit and you don’t think you can do it anymore, just keep swimming. No matter what life throws at you, if you keep swimming, you can make it to the other side. Keep your goals in sight and just keep swimming.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

My mom is what keeps me motivated. She’s always seen the best version of me, even when I gave her cause to think otherwise. If I’m having a stressful day, or a paper didn’t turn out the way I wanted, she listens and tells me she’s proud of me for taking my education seriously. She makes me feel like I can move mountains.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

My anticipated date of graduation is Spring or Summer of 2019.

Business gets more complex all the time, which means there’s no standing still. You must constantly learn new skills if you want to keep up, much less get ahead. That’s why so many working adults have school on their radar—and not just so they can say they have a degree. They know the right combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in business and management can position them to take the next leap in their careers.

Here’s where 91첥 comes in. We specialize in helping working adults move from point A to point B with a BBA, or Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Whether you’re eying a promotion in your current company or you want to venture into new territory, this practical online program will prepare you for the challenge. Need more convincing? Check out these reasons to go after your BBA in 2019.

  • Getting a BBA is a great idea at any age. It may be a little easier to go to school when you’re 18 than when you’re 28 or 38, but it’s still doable. Online programs like Averett’s give you the flexibility to fit school around the rest of your life.
  • More education qualifies you for more opportunities. Having a BBA degree on your resume automatically puts you in the running for jobs requiring that level of education. Even if it’s not required, the extra horsepower can make the difference between you and another candidate.
  • A bigger view of the world makes you more valuable. Don’t let anyone tell you that what you learn in school won’t help in the real world. 91첥 professors have been there. They teach what you need to impress your boss or a potential new employer.
  • New possibilities will arise. In a BBA degree program, you study a wide range of topics including accounting, human resource management, marketing and economics. Who knows? You might just find a new calling.
  • Going to school puts a spotlight on your ambition. Employers know it takes a lot of gumption to work and go to school at the same time. Just taking the initiative to improve yourself with a BBA shows you’re willing to take on more responsibility.
  • A BBA prepares you for an MBA. If earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree is on your bucket list, a BBA from Averett is the logical next step. Averett will help you build the foundation you need to become an executive-level leader.

Few investments return more value than a good education. 91첥’s online BBA degree program is affordable, accredited and tailor-made for busy adults. It’s 2019—time to invest in your future.

We’ve all got good intentions for the new year, but most of us let them fall by the wayside come February. Only about 20 percent of people actually stick to their vows to get in shape, stop a bad habit, save money or whatever else they need to improve. What’s their secret? Read on to find out how to make those new year’s resolutions a reality.

  1. Do one thing at a time. For some reason, that new number on the calendar makes us super ambitious. That’s a good thing, in moderation. Don’t try to overhaul everything in your life. Work on your most important goal first, then add others when you feel ready.
  1. Take baby steps. This tip makes just about every how-to-keep-your-resolutions list out there. And it makes sense. If you try to take on too much at once, like working out every day or quitting bread cold turkey, you’re more likely to give up. It’s easier to adopt new habits in small doses.
  1. Make it a game. It might sound silly but challenging yourself to reach little goals can propel you toward the finish line. A good example is seeing how far you can run by counting mailboxes and adding a few each day. If you’re trying to get more disciplined about school, see if you can finish all your homework before “The Big Bang Theory” comes on. Trust us, it works.
  1. Ask for help. You can probably handle most resolutions on your own, but if you face a tough challenge like a 20-year smoking habit or serious financial issues, you may need extra support. Ask your friends or school advisor if they can refer you to a support group, credit counselor or other free resources.
  1. Congratulate yourself. Did you make it through the first week without cheating on your diet? Then it’s okay to celebrate, as long as it’s not with ice cream and cake! Treat yourself to a movie or that sweater you’ve had your eye on.

In 2019, count yourself among the 20% of people who actually keep their new year’s resolutions. The results will be worth it!
