Jessica is a wife and mother of two daughters while also being an elementary educator for Pittsylvania County Schools. Her driving force to complete her education was her family, and wants to show her daughters that they can accomplish their goals despite life’s “curveballs.”

After graduating from Liberty University in 2017, she chose to enroll in Averett’s Master of Education program in 2019. She decided to attend Averett due to the family atmosphere and resources available for online students, including on-campus support if needed.

Her advice for those wanting to further their education at Averett Online is to “Go for it!” You have nothing to lose, but everything to gain.” While she just graduated in May, Jessica is already applying what she learned in curriculum and instruction to her own classroom. We love having you be a part of the Cougar family Jessica!

For this mother of two and full-time EMS provider, Aimee Wootton said she was able to maintain a work-life balance through the flexibility of Averett Online. As a student of Averett Online, she was able to access online tutoring, video meetings with her professors and complete all of her assignments due to their flexible due dates.

Aimee is no stranger to rejection. Even though she has been working in her field for eight years, she has been turned down from positions because she did not have the degree her potential employer was seeking. She said obtaining her degree from Averett Online in Criminal Justice and Sociology has given her “a basis for a future career in criminal counseling.” Aimee is currently working towards obtaining her Master’s degree to further prepare her for this career.

When asked about providing advice to those considering starting or continuing their educational journey, Aimee said, “Do it now. If you’re questioning it then you’re already motivated.”

Did you just enroll in a graduate program, or thinking to enroll, and are already stressed?

If so, you’re not alone! A full-time job, family, and friends – these are just a few of the justifiable reasons that you already feel overwhelmed. Everyone’s situation is different, but everyone has the ability to determine their own success.

Here are a few tips to help you be more successful and feel a little less overwhelmed.

The 3 Ps-Prepare, Prioritize and Persevere

Prepare ahead of time-

Preparing yourself for the expectations of your graduate course and becoming familiar with the structure of the course prior the start date, will help you to feel organized and in control. Admissions Counselors and/or New Start Coordinators are great resources for helping you develop a plan. ĚýDon’t be blindsided by due dates and workloads, be ready for your success!

Prioritize your Lifestyle-

When you have a family, full-time job, daily commitment to health and household duties, there is no “perfect time” to start graduate school. Although it won’t always be easy, you’re ready to take the next step in your education to improve your life.

Fortunately, at 91żě˛Ľ, graduate courses are completely online, allowing you to take courses at your convenience. Online courses allow you to create your own schedule while learning how to balance your other responsibilities.

Always keep in mind why you started and understand the impact this degree will have on your life. And please remember to go easy on yourself! Ask for help from family and friends, and focus on you a bit.

Persevere, even when it gets tough-

Continuing with your degree plan is critical to your success. When the courses get difficult, and your other responsibilities start to pile up, remember to keep pushing. During the planning process, it’s important to write out your goals and keep them handy to refer back to when you’re struggling. Don’t forget that you have resources at your disposal, Professors and Success Coaches are here for you. Keep pushing and exceed those goals. ĚýThis is your time!
