After the holiday break, returning to class can often be difficult. One of the most challenging things students often face is establishing a study schedule with their new courses. At Averett, we are here to help with a few quick tips:

  1. Don’t Wait! – The first weeks of your class are the best time to establish an effective study schedule. Utilize your time wisely by determining your study schedule in the first week of classes, so you can maximize your potential this semester.
  2. Be Consistent! – Establishing a regular study schedule is important. Find a time in week where you have downtime consistently; this could be at work while on break, when your children are napping, or in the evenings after work.
  3. Trade Time, Never Steal It! – As busy adults, we know it can often be difficult to study as planned. If you miss your planned study session simply adjust your schedule for that week, rather than missing your study session for that week. This will allow you to make-up the missed session, so you can stay on top of your coursework!
  4. Be Flexible! – Life always throws us curveballs, especially as adults. Try to leave a few minutes open in your week for makeup study sessions or to review your material again. Weekend evenings are the perfect opportunity to makeup study time that may have been missed in the week, or to review your materials one extra time.
  5. Don’t Be Afraid to Reach Out! – At Averett, we are here to help. If you find it is difficult to establish a firm study routine, reach out to Ashley Patterson, Coordinator of Tutoring Operations for Averett Online or check out our Student Resources page for additional tips!

The anticipation of the holidays is in the air and you cannot wait to relax while sipping your favorite cup of hot chocolate. However, as the holiday season quickly approaches you may begin to feel worried or stressed about finishing your coursework and spending time with family. At Averett Online, we understand it can often be stressful to finish your courses during the holidays. However, we believe in you and know you will do great!

Schedule time with your family to do fun holiday events, such as decorating, watching Hallmark movies or baking. Then set-up time where you can be alone to complete your coursework. This will maximize your efficiency and will allow you to complete all of your assignments on time!

You don’t have to get all perfect marks or nail that presentation at work to have a good holiday. Splurge on that extra slice of pie and take the time from your work to decorate the holiday tree with your family. Your work will still be there afterward and we know that you’ll do great at it.

Life is extraordinary. Yes your work as a student and professional is an important part of living the life that you want, but take the time to enjoy the little things. The seasons change quickly, and so do the people and things in your world. Make sure to treasure the little moments in life with your children and family this year.

On behalf of us at Averett Online, we hope that you have a wonderful holiday season!

“My favorite thing about the program is the level of open communication, the flexibility of classes and the help I received from the very 1st day I called and talked to the recruiter.†– Shiris Wyatt, BBA

Shiris_Wyatt

Shiris is currently employed at Dominion Energy in Richmond, VA as a business process analyst and has been working with the company for over 13 years. She enjoys traveling and one of her goals is to fly somewhere every 60-90 days. However, the past two years have been challenging in the world of flight and vacation. Her travel bucket list consists of visiting Hawaii, Paris, Africa, Fiji and Dubai between 2023 and 2025. Shiris also likes to spend her free time with her fiancé and friends, as well as tailgating NFL/college football games.

She decided to attend Averett Online due to a co-worker, Monica Davies, who attended and recommended the program to her. Monica spoke very highly of the school and said that Shiris would love the programs.

Before attending Averett Online, she explained that she never really liked school as a child and when she enrolled at Averett she vowed to do her very best. The outcome of that vow landed her a well-deserved spot on the Dean’s list for the 2021 spring semester. Her favorite thing about the program is the attentiveness of the advisors.

“…I’ve had the best advisors and student success coach. Mrs. Erma was fantastic before retiring, and since that time, Liz Cervantes has been a God-sent blessing.â€

On the topic of those interested in attainting their degree, Shiris stated that she, “…would support their decision by encouraging them to enroll in the Business Administration program at Averett Online. I have enjoyed the majority of my classes and learned a lot!â€

Keith chose to obtain his degree at 91¿ì²¥ because of the flexibility the programs provided him with his busy work schedule. He was inspired by the Averett faculty and staff and their commitment to providing students with the best educational experience possible.

As part of the M.Ed. – Administration and Supervision program, Keith valued the flexibility offered in his coursework. He enjoyed the asynchronous classes within the program and how they provided him with the ability to work on his own schedule and complete his work at his own pace.

Outside of the classroom setting, Keith enjoys watching documentaries to learn new things. Also, Keith is a music guru and often partakes in listening to a variety of music genres.

When we asked Keith to provide advice for those thinking about pursing their educational journey, Keith said the following; “If you have a career in mind and what to achieve better for yourself, then pursue your degree. Don’t let fears or doubts discourage you from furthering your education.â€

Whether you have been out of school for years, or even just returning from a holiday break, getting back in the groove of school can make for a difficult transition. When your alarm goes off that first day back, you might not feel like getting out of bed and starting your assignments. That is why it’s essential to prepare yourself for the first day.Student_Going_to_Class

The best thing you can do before the first day is figuring out how to balance school with your other responsibilities. You likely have more obligations than just school, such as family life and work. Invest in a planner that will allow you to schedule your daily task. Sometimes it can even be helpful to tell the people in your life that you are taking on a new responsibility that requires you to manage your time accordingly. Having a set time for homework and studying goes a long way!

It can also be helpful to establish a sleep schedule. You should wake up ready to tackle the day, however; you won’t feel refreshed if you don’t get a good night’s sleep. While college might result in a few late nights, you should still be able to get enough sleep regularly. Instead of staying up late on your break, go to bed at a decent time. It will be much easier to go to bed early during the school year when your body has adjusted accordingly.

Another way to prepare for school is to organize a designated area to study. It might be a desk in your bedroom or a quiet room at your local library. Wherever you decide to do your classes, make sure it is a place where you will not get easily distracted. Completing schoolwork requires hard work and concentration, so avoid areas that are crowded and loud.

Lastly, motivate yourself by remembering why you are going to school. It will guide you through your educational journey when you want to give up. You know why you started college. Maybe it was to show your children they can achieve great things, or perhaps you are ready to advance your career. Whatever your why, don’t forget it! If necessary, write it down on a sticky note and hang it where you can see it each morning.

Even though going back to school can be a big transition, it is worth doing. The first few days may be difficult, but it will pay off as you walk across the stage!

Darryl chose to pursue his degree at Averett to improve his self-knowledge and marketability. He graduated from Averett with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration is 2018,ÌıthenÌıreceived hisÌımaster’sÌıinÌıbusinessÌıadministration with aÌıconcentration inÌıhumanÌıresourceÌımanagementÌıin 2020. Darryl’s time at Averett equipped him with “…enhanced study and learning habits,†and those habits were used to prepare for higher opportunities.Ìı

Darryl enjoys being a father and grandfather. He is also 20-year veteran of Lynchburg Fire Department where he currently works as aÌımasterÌıfirefighter/paramedic. Before he joined the fire department, he worked as a department director, facilities manager,ÌıteamÌısupervisor and as a high school educator.Ìı

“If anyoneÌıwas on the fence about going back to school, the advice that I would suggest is to be fully dedicated, to be certain you have a solid support system, and to also have a firm handle on your time management skills. These items are key in your success at furthering your education, but without either of them failure could slow or hinder your success in achieving your goals,â€ÌıDarryl said.ÌıÌı
